Sitting in front of my boss and hearing him say, "we've decided to restructure and we have decided to eliminate the general counsel position," was not what I was expecting when at the end of March. After I got back to my office and called my broker, I decided it was time to go to Paris for a couple of months.
When I began to tell people that I was going, the question I got asked the most was, "why Paris?" The answer is that the decision was sort of serendipity and a bit random. I had been bored by my job for some time and had been talking about it with a Parisian friend when I was in Guatamala in February. My friend Nathalie suggested that I take a year off and live in head and learn French. Although I initially waived off the idea, it got stuck in my brain and I started contemplated quitting my job at the end of the year and going to Paris for six months. Why Paris instead of someplace else? I guess I have always been fascinated by all things French and when the idea was planted - it seemed natural.
So....when my position was eliminated, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to go - take some time to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life and learn some French - as I said, a little serendipity and a little random.
